On January 1st, the team over at DigitalMarketer.com posted an awesome article about their predictions for marketing in 2015.

I especially liked what Ryan Deiss said in his opening prediction, specifically because I have been thinking exactly the same thing, and to hear Ryan confirm my thoughts was very assuring.

Soon all display advertising will be retargeted advertising and the pixel will become even more valuable than the click itself. As larger advertisers continue to buy up ad inventory (and create their own retargeting audiences) those that fail to “pixel” their site visitors won’t be able to afford to advertise. …we’re paying closer and closer attention to a new metric: CPP. Cost Per Pixel. Because dropping that little pixel allows us to follow up with “our people” with relevant offers.

I believe that building your own “Custom Audience” or “Retargeting Audience” is going to be as valuable (if not more valuable) than even building your own Email List!

And… it’s even EASIER to do. 

My belief, and what I will be teaching ALL of my students from today on, is the TWO most important things to do when starting to promote your website is:

  1. Build Your Email List
  2. Build Your Custom / Retargeting Audience.

Do NOT promote another website link, share an article, blog post or video UNTIL you set up the ability to Build Your Custom Audience.

You can do this in just a few very simple steps and you’ll be building a highly targeted custom audience of people who are already engaging with your relevant content and promotions.

With retargeting you now have the ability to reach out to and connect with ALL of the website visitors and interested prospects who DID NOT give you their email address, or are NOT opening their emails.

I won’t get into a lengthy discussion here about how email marketing is getting more and more difficult and how open rates and click rates are steadily declining. But let’s just say that retargeting is now an even more CRITICAL strategy for all marketers, regardless of what strategies you use to advertise, and will help to really BOOST your conversions and your ROI.

Start Building Your Audience Right Now

Retargeting is a big subject and I can’t share everything about it in this one article.

So for today, we’ll start with the basics, and the easiest strategy that every marketer can implement RIGHT NOW.

We’ll start with Facebook. It’s one of the largest ad platforms in the world, you are already using it, and it’s totally free to start building your own custom audience.

Even if you are NOT right now advertising on Facebook… I strongly recommend you at least start building a custom audience of ALL your website visitors. If you are NOT… you are simply leaving money on the table.

STEP 1: If You Have Your Own Website

If you have your own website, wordpress blog, or are using landing pages from LeadPages or ClickFunnels you can very easily start building a custom audience of all your website visitors with just a few clicks of your mouse.

If you don’t have an advertising account with Facebook yet, simply log in to Facebook and create your advertising account here.

    This is HUGE Norbert, and I couldn’t agree more.

    Your custom audience is an even more efficient way to get your content in front of your peeps since less and less people are seeing email broadcasts. People spend way more time on FB than they do in their email, you may as well be top of mind!

    One of the things I’ve started doing is creating content that I know specific audiences will absolutely love, run some ads to that audience, and of course have the pixel on the blog.

    That builds the custom audience for retargeting. Then we have the retargeting ads that go straight to capture page or other web properties for which we pay a FRACTION of the price since its a smaller audience.

    Your article puts it all so well, definitely going to share this with my peeps.

    That’s weird half my comment got erased? What I was trying to post was. Exciting stuff! Thanks for sharing! Do you know if it’s compatible with web visitors that use mobile devices? Like Android, Apple, and Windows phones and tablets?
