Are you tired of the home “parties”, prospecting strangers, the constant rejection, pitching friends & family, new reps dropping out faster then they came in and tiny commission checks after weeks and months of work trying to build your network marketing business?

Look I know exactly how you feel.

I struggled for 6 years with 5 different companies trying to build a downline.

I did everything my upline told me to do.

At one point I was doing 15-20 one-on-one meetings per month and I had recruited 16 new distributors!

Yay for me!

But within 3 months… 8 of them disappeared, 4 became virtually inactive and the 4 I had left couldn’t even recruit 1 person!!

What I’ve learned since, is that this is a far too common story in MLM.

But this article is NOT intended to put the blame on the MLM business model.

Absolutely not.

The purpose of this article is to help you evaluate if MLM is the right business model for you.

And if it’s not, to offer you an alternative that we find to be much more profitable… especially if you are looking to create a significant income in several months rather than several years.

If you are struggling right now to create results and you feel frustration and self-doubt, my intention with this article is to help to you see that it is perfectly ok if you decide that MLM is not for you.

Contrary to what is preached in the industry, network marketing is NOT a “better way“; not for everyone.

There are other alternatives that might suit you a lot better, as we have found, and can pay you much better as well.

They key is to determine what business model will work best for you, your strengths, talents and goals.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result.”

The BIG Distinction

I need to make a big distinction here between 2 very different business models; network marketing or multi-level marketing and online affiliate marketing.

Over the last few years as many network marketers have embraced the internet as a means to grow their business, it seems that the line between these 2 very different business models has been blurred.

And as a result, I believe many entrepreneurs are needlessly struggling because they don’t clearly understand the specifics of what it takes to succeed in each business model, mistakenly thinking they are one in the same.

But if you take the time to truly understand each business model, then you can clearly see that these 2 business models are very different, not only in their compensation structures but more importantly in the skills and daily activities that are required of you to succeed.

If you choose to ignore the distinctions between these 2 very different business models, you will continue to struggle and continue to wonder what you are doing wrong.

Network Marketing Vs. Affiliate Marketing – Is There a Difference?

In network marketing or multi-level marketing, the compensation plan pays you on many levels of depth, so creating financial success is based primarily on the duplication of your team. Your own personal recruiting will not get you very far. If you want to earn a healthy 5 or 6 figure income in network marketing than you must work in depth with your team and get others to duplicate.

Any experienced and successful network marketer will tell you that the key to duplication and growth in your organization is momentum, and the key to momentum is having your team do very simple actions that everyone can duplicate.

Internet marketing is NOT a simple duplicable action that everyone can do. So if you are focusing your efforts on internet marketing strategies primarily AND you are trying to create duplication in your mlm organization, you WILL struggle to earn any real, sustainable income from your efforts.

If you doubt this you will want to listen to what my good friends who were top recruiters in 2 different network marketing companies have to say about their experience.

In contrast, in the online affiliate marketing model you get paid a commission (from 25-90%+) on the sales of products or services you personally make. Some affiliate programs will pay a 2nd tier commission for the sales of affiliates you refer to the program but typically that is in the range of 5-10% and is an insignificant part of your overall income.

In the affiliate marketing model your financial success is based primarily on YOUR personal production.

In network marketing there are many skills and activities you must learn and perform on an on-going bases to create results like prospecting, 3 way calls, home meetings, one-on-one presentations, telephone follow up, closing and many other team building activities.

In online affiliate marketing we focus on creating sales funnels, creating content, driving traffic, building online engagement, email follow up, direct response copywriting and various advertising strategies.

These skills and activities are very, very different.

In network marketing, the concept is to build a large organization of distributors, where a large amount of people all do small activities that add up to large production. Sounds great in theory but there are many challenges and obstacles to actually building a large organization and more importantly RETAINING them.

Attrition and company hopping is at an all time high because of the internet.

In affiliate marketing the concept is drastically different. You sell products and services and you get paid a set commission based on the revenue you generate. If you want to earn more you sell more products or services OR you sell more valuable products and services where you can earn much greater commissions.

Which Model Is Right For You?

Hopefully by this point you are beginning to clearly see the distinctions between these 2 very different business models.

If you’ve been struggling to create duplication and produce a real income in network marketing, hopefully you are beginning to see exactly why that is.

So at this point, I believe, you must make a decision for yourself.

You must decide:

Are you a network marketer OR are you an internet marketer?

If you make this distinction TODAY, you will be able to release an incredible amount of pressure, stress and frustration. You will finally be able to FOCUS on what you truly want to be doing, on your strengths and abilities. You will finally be able to release all of your biggest challenges and focus on designing the kind of business you truly want to have.

That’s what I did.

And as soon as I did that, I turned 5 years of struggle in network marketing, making tiny commission checks to earning over $250,000 in my first 12 months marketing online.

That’s what my friends did.

And as soon as they did, they were able to increase their income from a few thousands dollars a month in their MLM to earning nearly $500,000 in just 9 months.

If you choose to not make this very important distinction, and continue to confuse these 2 distinct business models, well that’s your choice. Maybe you know something I don’t. Awesome. But based on my 10 years of experience, I know that most likely you will continue to struggle to create the business, income and lifestyle you desire.

Now yes… there are a very small handful of individuals who you could argue are successful internet marketers AND successful network marketers. But what you see on the outside isn’t always a clear representation of the REAL numbers. The REAL truth is that for these internet marketing network marketers, I can almost guarantee that their internet marketing income (from the sale of affiliate products, JV partnerships and their own info products, coaching and masterminds) DWARFS the income from their network marketing business.

Just look at 99% of the highest paid network marketers in the world. They are NOT internet marketers. They did NOT build their business online. They built their network marketing organization the traditional way.

This is the TRUTH that no body wants to talk about in this industry. And for good reason.

I know very well that this article will ruffle a few feathers and will upset some leaders in this industry.

I am perfectly ok with that.

I am not one to “tow the company line”.

If you know me, you know my reputation for being honest, transparent and frank.

I simply tell it like it us. And obviously some people don’t appreciate the truth.

I also know that this article is going to help hundreds, maybe even thousands, finally realize why they are struggling in their online businesses. And that has always been my mission. And that mission to me, is more important than being “politically correct” and not saying what I believe needs to be said.

So… Why Would Top Recruiters Quit MLM?

Because they decided it was not for them.

Because they decided they were internet marketers and NOT network marketers.

Because they decided they could earn a lot more with a compensation plan that was more suited to their strengths and their lifestyle goals.

Am I saying that affiliate marketing is better than network marketing… or that it’s easier or somehow superior?

No.

My point is that there are very HUGE and clear distinctions between network marketing and affiliate marketing.

Most online marketers are oblivious to these differences and are trying to build network marketing organizations using online affiliate marketing strategies.

It doesn’t work.

The internet is awesome for building an audience, for building influence, for generating leads and even for PERSONAL recruiting.

But DUPLICATION in network marketing is a result of the traditional methods that network marketers have always used: prospecting, warm market list, 3 way calls, follow up calls, home & hotel meetings and 3rd party tools.

My strategy to build a 6 or 7 figure affiliate income is very different and would NEVER work to create a 6 or 7 figure income in network marketing. 

  • I don’t spend any time on the telephone with prospects.
  • I don’t prospect. I don’t network. I don’t talk to warm market.
  • I would never do a house party.
  • I have no interest in developing a massive organization in the tens of thousands.
  • I create marketing websites and sales funnels. I drive traffic. My marketing systems do ALL of my selling without me EVER picking up the phone.
  • I have a phone team that upsells my customers into higher value products and offers.
  • I leverage a coaching team that works with my customers.
  • I do ZERO personal follow up or selling.

Clearly these actions would not get me very far in network marketing.

Yet, I have been able to generate over $25 million in revenue in my online businesses since I left MLM and started online marketing in 2007.

The distinction is VERY clear to me.

So now its up to you.

You get to choose the right business for you.

If you are open to learning about a different business model…

If you are open to building a business with MULTIPLE income streams… not just depending on one!
